Why Record a Live Event?

In a period where video seems to be ‘king’ of the media, it’s surprising how many great artists still have very little of it out there.  Understandably, having specific music video’s made can be quite costly, yet they’re a very necessary requirement in this day and age.  A lot of times you’ll come across Youtube video’s, where the artist has been videoed playing live using a single camera and worse still, the audio was also recorded by the same camera (ouch!).  I’m convinced that this is more of a hindrance to the success of an artist than a help.  A great audio recording (which is a must!!) sync’d to high quality video will immediately step you out in front of everyone else.

Recording live gigs is a great way to record a lot of tracks all at once, create a saleable live album, get your music on Facebook and YouTube etc and to create showreels that can be used to secure more live gigs.

Working in conjunction with our sister company Moyr Business Productions and our membership with South Yorkshire Film Newtork, we have access to premier personnel and technology, allowing us to shoot and edit live footage, better than ever before.

The Live Show Audio Recording Method

We’re currently running a 16 track remote recording facility, with an option for more via sub mixes if needed. All the instruments that are going via the house PA system will be split out just before they go in to the house multicore using a bank of transformer isolated splitters. One of the splits will continue to the house PA multicore and the other will be sent via a separate multicore to our recording facility, which will be set aside somewhere in the room. Where necessary, the signal dynamics will be controlled using compressors and each instrument recorded to it own individual 24 bit digital track.

If the house PA setup doesn’t use enough microphones (or suitable microphones), we shall add them were necessary. For example, depending on the size of the venue, the house PA may only use 4 mic’s on the drum kit, kick, snare and two over heads. This is not adequate enough for a proper live recording. In this scenario we’d have to put extra mic’s on the snare, hats and toms and then connect them directly to our recording multicore. Sometimes, the guitar amps may not be mic’d up and so we’d have to do the same there too. We basically strive to capture every separate instrument to it’s own recording where possible and also a recording of the audience/ambiance.

The live recordings are then mixed and mastered back at my studio. Overdubs and editing can be carried out during this period if the artist deems it necessary. The finished recording is then converted to multiple formats and given to the artist.  Permission must be granted ahead of time from the front desk sound engineer.

The Live Show Video Recording Method

The minimum amount of cameras to do a reasonable shoot of a live gig would be 4 or 5.
Front wide shot at 4k resolution to allow for digital camera pan and zooms during editing.
A spot camera on the drums at 1080p
A camera from the stage looking a the the audience at 1080p (optional)
Two mobile cameras at 1080p

This is what we would call standard shoot and it would be finalised as a 1080p video.

Moving on from that, other options would include all cameras to shoot in 4k and the final video to be produced in 4k.  This has a significant cost implication, as handling multi 4k video over the duration of an entire gig is very time consuming.  Also, most people still don’t have access to 4k TV’s, or computer monitors, so 1080p is still a sensible option, as viewing a 4k video on a 1080 TV, will still only give you 1080.

There is also an option for another mobile camera, or even a jib mounted camera (space dependant).  In theory, we could offer many more cameras and camera combination to give even more angles, but 5 or 6 cameras will give great results.  So unless there is a real need to go beyond 6, it’s best to stick to 6 or less.  Moyr Productions and the sister company Moyr Business Productions, are members of South Yorkshire Film Network, so access to quality camera operators is simple.

If budgets are tight, then the budget option would be 3 cameras
Front wide shot at 4k resolution to allow for digital camera pan and zooms during editing.
A spot camera on the drums at 1080p
One mobile cameras at 1080p

During editing, all cameras, will be sync’d with the audio and put through a process of colour grading to give it the required look.  From dark and moody, to bright and happy, to old and crusty etc.  You get it.  The final video will be made available as a downloadable file in you required format.

One thing to take in to account when videoing live gigs, is the amount of space available to shoot.  There has to be access for the camera men to move around, without hindrance from the audience.  There also has to be a space available towards the back of the hall, centre stage, for the fixed frontal shot.
